Leaves fall, Leafs rise

Sep 15, 2019 | Blog | 3 comments

I enjoy the sunshine and summers’ warmth. However…
I love the cool Autumn rains of the north west coast.

Branta canadensis fly in full formation overhead spreading the message – Socked fog mornings, dense and moist, are close at hand.
Crisscrossing Saanich, they commune in fields and estuaries, preparing for their long flight south.

The first big rains drench.
Swelling streams, open arms for QOLEW̱, the homecoming of Dog Salmon.
(That’s my nickname growing up, the fisherman’s Chum.)

For now this good soaking is welcome.
By January the persistent downpour exhausts even the most ardent lover of rain.
I will yearn once again to see the stars, and the moon.

Leaves (summer’s canopy shade from the sun) fall and blanket the ground.
Protecting the seeds for Spring germination.
Now is the time for the Leafs rise.
Hope for yet another season.

Sweet! Here’s to the Brant geese and the Dog salmon. When they are with us, life is good!

I really enjoyed your “Leaves Fall, Leafs Rise”. It was very poetic and it took me back to my youth. I spent some time in Terrace, BC as a kid and my Dad was a sports fisherman. The rivers were teeming with fish back then. I have not been up in Terrace for a long time, but I hear that it’s not the same as it used to be. I remember Dog Salmon, Pinks, Coho, and Springs. Sockeye were not in my vocabulary back then. I enjoy the Fall and the rains that come with it, not to mention the shortened days, but come on…Leave Fall, Canucks Rise.
