When Gayle Baker, on behalf of the Salt Spring Community Alliance, visited me in my constituency office to invite me to participate in their grassroots effort to assist Salt Spring Islanders access the services they need, I did not hesitate to offer my support.
The unique governance structure of the Southern Gulf Island communities can make it challenging for people to know who they should contact to get assistance.
With the federal government, provincial government, Islands Trust and Capital Regional District all responsible for slices of governance, who takes care of what is not always clear. This challenge is exacerbated for the most vulnerable people in our communities.
So when the volunteers of the Community Alliance decided to develop a space to gather people, information and resources to provide to residents, I felt it was important to help promote their effort and participate as best I can.
They have secured the Thrifty Foods community room in the back of the flower shop in Ganges and will open the door every Friday from 10:00am-1:00pm to connect with the community.
I have committed to be there on the first Friday of each month to discuss any and all provincial issues, challenges and ideas with Salt Spring Islanders. As I understand it, other elected officials will be there on other Fridays throughout the month.
I’m thrilled to participate in this initiative and I encourage you to drop in to chat. Aside from this opportunity, I’m available to meet you to discuss your concerns, ideas and opportunities for the provincial government.
