Win, lose, play: A Pokemon Battle

Background

Regirock, is a legendary Pokemon and is the central feature of my Pokemon deck.

Silas, and his cousin Reuben, are into Pokemon. A few months ago, Reuben made a deck for me, and Silas taught me the game. Pokemon didn’t show up until the 1990’s, so I am pre-Pokemon. I grew up in the 1980’s with Atari’s and the World Wrestling Federation.

We buy packs of cards and Silas and his friends build teams with them. Then they test their strategies against each other in epic battles.

Well, out of those Pokemon cards emerged another force. Out of the Ashes, one might say.

The cards in the tin are limited because unfortunately, we have not bought our kid a lot of Pokemon. The strength in that pile of cards was Regirock. We had three of them. So, my 62-card deck came together with Regirock at the centre.

What I like about Regirock is it’s strong defence and powerful attack. That is my style. Aggressive. Jump on the opponent early, and don’t let up until all my prize cards are flipped.

Play to play

Last night before bed, Ella and I teamed up with my Pokemon deck, to take on Silas (and his much improved bench, powered by a new Elite Trainer Box.)

Regirock showed up on my bench. But, the supporting cards were not there. Silas had us on the ropes pretty quickly. He had all sorts of shiny foil Pokemon EX’s and GX’s (yes they are as cool and as powerful as they sound) on his bench. Energy was flowing and he could have finished us off at any point. Yet, he wanted to play with us.

“Come on Silas, finish what you started. Don’t hesitate! Go for the jugular! Take us out!” I urged him. He just wanted to play.

At that moment it donned on me. I play to win, and he plays to play.

It is a welcome reminder to calm down and not be so serious all the time! Throw the fact that Mary Poppins Returns was the matinee, the message from yesterday was pretty clear.

Don’t take yourself so darn seriously, relax and play, for plays sake.
