MALAHAT LNG HAS BEEN CANCELLED!
Amongst the densely packed meeting schedule in the constituency office this afternoon, I got the best news. A visit to malahatlng.com confirmed that “Malahat Nation and Steelhead LNG are no longer exploring the proposed Malahat LNG project.”
For 27 months the threat of a floating LNG plant hung over the Saanich Inlet. Despite the project’s implausibility from the moment it was conceived, only this news, on this website, would give me comfort.
Hundreds of people on both sides of the Inlet came together to learn about LNG projects. As a result, new friends and neighbours started organizing a community response to the proposal called the Saanich Inlet Network. I’m so thankful for all the incredible people I’ve met over the past two years. We have a lot to celebrate.
The projects economic case has always been dubious at best, it put the safety of tens of thousands residents at risk and the environmental impacts were unacceptable. We can do so much better, and now we have that chance!
Thanks for this news, Adam, and thanks for the work you and the Green Party have done on this issue. This is super!
LNG tanker routes have to be kept away from populated areas, e.g., Haro Strait and Victoria.
Great! Excellent news!
