Fall session wrap-up

Nov 30, 2017 | Blog | 0 comments

I love the work in the legislature, but, I am excited for the close of the fall session.

It has been a long haul and it will be good to reflect on the things we have done well, and what we can do better. This applies to both the legislative work and community advocacy. We have settled in well but it is important for critical analysis.

There is a lot of work. For me it is not just about volume, we can always be busy, working hard over long hours. Rather, we do our best to do good work.

In the Legislature

This fall session has featured several important changes to how our democracy functions. We banned corporate, union and foreign donations at the provincial and local levels. Reforms to the lobbying has begun and we will continue the work of increasing transparency in 2018. Finally, as a result of our work this fall, British Columbians will vote on proportional representation next year.

In the Constituency

There is no handbook on how a to run an effective community office. We strive for very high standards in our office. Saanich North and the Islands is a diverse riding, with many communities with unique needs. Given that there are many needs that we address every day.

We have created a community outreach program called The Public Circle. There are many opportunities for you to participate in our democracy including Dialogues and Town Halls. Additionally, I have spent many hours in our office in Sidney as well office hours on all the Gulf Islands. We have many dates for events and office hours scheduled for the the coming weeks. You can see all our upcoming events here.

Finally, I will be taking a few weeks off at the end of December. It has been a long run since last May and I look forward to spending time with Emily and our kids, Silas and Ella.

Thank you for the opportunity to represent Saanich North and the Islands. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday season and if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact our community office.
