I’m grateful for the opportunity to speak at the IMPACT Sustainability Travel and Tourism Conference at the Victoria Conference Centre.

My career in public service started at the front window at the Mt. Newton McDonald’s but many of my perspectives today were formed first in the dish pit and then as a bus-boy and waiter in The Dining Room Restaurant at the Butchart Gardens.

In my presentation at the conference I highlight how my life in public service is still informed by these experiences and how the tourism industry has the potential to be a building block for the future of a British Columbia economy in transition.

I have been hoping that the High Schools , here on Salt Spring Is. and elsewhere, could create a course that trained them for the hospitality Industry. We need workers here, and having ones who already live here,
means we don’t have to find housing for them. And they could probably come back each year while they are in University and work for the Summers.
