People have asked me how one person can represent such a large and diverse community? They ask how I know what my constituents want? With 50,000 people, all with their own opinions, needs, wants, wishes and desires, it’s a steep challenge for sure.
The best way to keep the pulse of the community is to create as many connections as possible. Community engagement is a priority of my constituency operations and it has been central to my philosophy from the first day after my election in May 2017.
My constituency team has tried a few different formats and we are committed to continuously work to improve the extent of our outreach. My goal is to connect, and remain connected, with as many aspects of our multi-dimensional communities as possible.
Last week, I began another round of community meetings on Pender Island and Central Saanich.
Our Member of Parliament, Elizabeth May, set the bar high with her twice yearly tour of the communities. On a couple of occasions since 2017, Elizabeth and I have co-hosted meetings; however, for this round it’s just me.
2019 has been an eventful year and at the meetings I will provide a brief update of my work in both the constituency and legislature and discuss any issue that comes up in the conversation.
This is a great way for you to increase awareness of an issue publicly. I will respond as I am able; otherwise, I and my constituency team will look into the issue further.
